3 Best Handheld Paint Sprayer Reviews 2016

Paint Sprayers

One of the best investments that I’ve made was my handheld paint sprayer. I’ve done more than a dozen small projects around my house with it and it is still going strong.

  • These are perfect for painting furniture like cabinets, bookshelves, dressers and even outdoor objects like small fences, patios, tables, chairs and mailboxes….. You have the ultimate control over the spray pattern and you can eliminate a lot of the mess that is created with a larger airless paint sprayer.
  • However, if the type of project that you need to complete is painting an entire building or shop, then an airless paint sprayer is more suitable for those types of projects where Latex paint is required. Airless paint sprayers have a better capability of spraying a thicker paint than handheld sprayers do, in general.

There are a lot of handheld paint sprayers on the market that claim to be the best available. It can be a difficult task to narrow down your options, so I will help you out by providing you with the top three models and give you my unbiased review of each.

Brief Reviews 3 Best Handheld Paint Sprayers

#1. Wagner 0518050 Control Spray Double Duty

( Best Handheld HVLP Paint Sprayer )

Best Choice
4.2 Stars (4.2 / 5)
Wagner 0518050 Control Spray Double Duty Paint Sprayer is one of the best values you can find in a handheld paint sprayer. With the three different spray patterns and simple clean-up, any DIY’er would love having this product.
  • This paint sprayer is designed for both indoor and outdoor use. So no matter if you are painting a small wall, chairs, tables or anything else of similar size, this handheld paint sprayer will be suitable for it.
  • You will enjoy the three separate spray patterns that it offers, including horizontal, vertical and round. The different spray patterns are great for completing different projects that will ensure you get an even spray.
  • You have to make sure you are using a thin paint, like a stain or sealer, varnishes, urethanes or lacquers with this sprayer. If you are using a thicker type of paint, like latex or a thick acrylic, then you will have to water the paint down to make it thinner. Also, even the tiniest particles could clog up the machine, so it might be worth investing in a paint strainer to make sure the paint is clean when going in and coming out.
  • The Lock-n-Go feature is convenient because you can easily switch out your cartridges if you need to change paints or if you just need to clean up quickly. Also, the powerful dual fan will ensure that enough paint gets sprayed from the nozzle, while the air turbine technology controls the pressure to prevent overspray. As a safety feature, the spark-arrested motor will prevent the flammable fumes from being ignited.
  • There aren’t many parts to this paint sprayer, so the clean-up is pretty easy. In fact, if you don’t clean it immediately after each use, there’s a chance that paint could dry in the machine and cause problems when you try to use it. This is one of the best handheld paint sprayers that you can buy and it tops our list for the best quality product for the price.

#2. Wagner 0520000 Power Tex Texture Sprayer

Also Great
4.2 Stars (4.2 / 5)
Wagner 0520000 Power Tex Texture Sprayer is easy to use and cheaper than hiring a professional to spray texture on your walls or ceilings. It’s great for spraying on rooms and smaller homes and is even easier to clean up, so the average DIY’er can do a professional job every time.
  • Paying a professional to spray on texture on your ceilings or walls can be expensive. A great alternative is to purchase this texture sprayer and do it yourself!
  • The built-in air turbine on this sprayer can provide you with plenty of power to texture your ceiling without a compressor. Whether you want to spray texture on your walls, ceilings, basement or any other suitable surface, this texture sprayer will handle the job.
  • This sprayer has a two-position hopper that you can adjust for either ceiling or wall spraying. The one-gallon capacity is plenty large enough to get a room done. The small, medium and large nozzle, along with the variable-flow trigger, will allow you to easily spray three different types of texture: acoustical popcorn, orange peel and knockdown.
  • When working with different types of texture mixes, you may have to adjust the thickness to get the proper consistency. The dry texture mixes are perfect to use, but if you try to spray it and it’s not working as well as it should, then try thinning it out a little bit with some water.
  • The main weakness of this paint sprayer is that you have to hold it no more than two feet away from your target. This is usually suitable for spraying walls, but it can be difficult if you are spraying ceilings that are higher. Also, if you mixed up the texture a little too thick, then the pressure of the sprayer will be reduced significantly.

#3. Graco 16N659 TrueCoat Plus II Paint Sprayer

( Best Handheld Airless Paint Sprayer )

Also Great
4.2 Stars (4.2 / 5)
Graco 16N659 TrueCoat Plus II Paint Sprayer is easily one of the best handheld paint sprayers on the market. Anyone who likes to do weekend projects or has several painting jobs to do around the house will enjoy the convenience and professional quality that this paint sprayer offers.
  • The Graco 16N659 TrueCoat Plus II is different from the Wagner 0518050 Paint Sprayer because it is an Airless Sprayer instead of HVLP Sprayer. This paint will spray paint at a higher pressure and a smoother finish, but it will also waste a lot more paint into the atmosphere because of the high pressure.

” The two models are suitable for the same types of projects, but they operate differently in those aspects. “

  • One of the best parts about this paint sprayer is the ProControl feature, which allows you to control the spray pressure so you won’t have as much overspray.
  • The Tilt-N-Spray feature is also convenient since you can spray in virtually any direction while still using all the paint in the can.
  • Of the paint, you can use anything as light as stains all the way to acrylics and heavy latex without having to water them down. That’s the main difference in terms of functionality and that’s also why the price of this one is a little higher than the other models that we’ve reviewed. It may have a lot more features than the other two Wagner models, but it also has a higher price tag.

When using this paint sprayer, I realized that I didn’t have to make multiple overlapping passes like I did with other sprayers. That makes it nice when you have larger projects that you need to get done, since you will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes on projects. Overall, this is one of the best handheld airless paint sprayers that you can buy if you are willing to spend the extra amount. It’s definitely worth it if you have a lot of painting projects that you need to complete.

My Honest Verdict

If there were one best handheld paint sprayer that I would recommend you buy, it would be the Wagner 0518050 Control Spray Double Duty Paint Sprayer. It offers some of the same features as the higher priced models, but at a much lower price.

However, if you have more room in your budget to spend on a higher quality model, then the Graco 16N659 TrueCoat Plus II is the best model of them all.

The three models I provided you in this article are some of the best on the market today, so once you determine the type of projects that you need to complete, there’s a great chance that one of those three will fit what you need when it comes to dependability and getting the job done.

Some Projects to Complete With Handheld Paint Sprayers

If you aren’t sure exactly how easy it is to use a handheld paint sprayer, then here are two common projects that people do that a handheld paint sprayer comes in handy for.

Project 1: Staining or Painting Your Deck

  • Step 1: Inspect your deck and make sure it is free from broken or splintered wood. Replace any boards or nails that may be worn down too much.
  • Step 2: Remove all furniture and objects from the deck and sweep off any dust or small debris. Power wash the deck to get tough dirt and grime off for a clean surface. Be sure to get every bit of dirt off of it, otherwise, the paint won’t stick as well.
  • Step 3: You can use a deck-staining tool to help you easily get between the boards of your deck. If you don’t have one or don’t want to buy one, then a handheld paint sprayer can work just as well. Apply a consistent amount of stain throughout your deck and it will look like a professional job.
  • Step 4: Use your handheld paint sprayer to apply an even coating of stain to the railings and lattice if it’s present. Applying an even coat throughout the entire deck will give it a professional appearance that should last for several years.

Project 2: Painting Your Shed

  • Step 1: Scrape off the old paint, pressure wash and sand the surface to make it a prime work surface for the paint to stick. Replace any nails or boards as necessary.
  • Step 2: Once the shed is dry, prepare the surrounding areas with tape or plastic, so that the overspray from your paint sprayer doesn’t get on them.
  • Step 3: Grab your paint sprayer and spray the paint in a consistent pattern with some overlaps. This will ensure that you have a nice even coverage throughout the shed.
  • Step 4: Observe your work and determine if a second coat is needed. If you sprayed slowly enough, then you should be able to get by with just one coat. Use some extra paint to touch up any small areas, if needed.
