Afterall, pets are very much like introducing children to your home – there are many potential hazards that may harm them, and it is critical that you ensure your home is safe and secure before your fur buddy arrives.

In this article, we will look at how you can prepare your home for pets, so read on to find out more!

Get Your Flooring Prepared

If you have the luxury to do so, always make sure that the flooring in your house or apartment is prepped for your new furry friend.

Floors made of vinyl material are absolutely ideal for a household of pets as it can withstand pet nails or any leaky accidents that may occur.

Vinyl is also scratch proof, ensuring that your furry friend doesn’t rip the floors apart.

Other great materials for flooring are wooden floorboards, with carpet being the least optimal of choices if you are thinking of raising a pet in your household.

Keep Small Objects Out Of Reach

Pets are very much like babies – they’ll try to swallow anything in sight!

This is why it is so important that you pet-proof your home by ensuring that all small items such as medication, coins, loose screws and such are kept safely away from the reach of your companion.

Ensuring that things are kept securely will prevent any accidents or worried trips to the vet.

Watch The Electrical Cords

Another thing to keep an eye out for is electrical cords, especially if you’re introducing a puppy or kitten to your home.

During the teething phase, kittens and puppies try to get their teeth on everything.

Chewing on an electrical cord not only damages it but puts your pet in serious danger of being electrocuted.

Other hanging cords around the house should be kept away from pets as well, as anything that dangles will entice your new pet’s curiosity.

Better safe than sorry!

Keep That Toilet Seat Down

Animals are highly attracted to pools of water, as they are enticed to either drink from it or play in it.

This is why it is essential that you keep the toilet seat down, preventing your little furry friend from getting in there.

Not only is it unsanitary and potentially hazardous for your pet to drink toilet water – it also poses the risk of a kitten or a puppy falling in when you least expect it.

Keep your new companion safe by keeping that seat down!

Safeguard Outdoor Areas

If you live in an apartment, always ensure that your balcony door is kept closed, and make sure that all guests are aware of this rule.

Animals are curious creatures, and a balcony door left open could spell potential trouble.

If you live in a house, make sure that your backyard is adequately fenced up.

That way, your pet doesn’t have any chance of running out onto the road, or even worse, oncoming traffic.

Pets are sneaky and anything can happen in a mere few seconds, so always keep a lookout for these things.

Check Your Plants

Did you know that a number of plant species are harmful and some even potentially fatal if they come into contact with your cat or dog?

When purchasing flowers, always ensure that you check online if they are suited to be around pets.

If you already have plants in and outside of the house, go through them one by one before introducing your new friend to your home.

This is a small price to pay for the safety of your furry companion.
