10 Easy-to-Play Songs for Acoustic Guitar Beginners

Novice guitar players don’t have to wait until they’ve memorized the entire fretboard to play popular songs. They also don’t need to have a high-end guitar in order to rock it out – just look for the best cheap acoustic guitar and start!

There are many pop, folk and rock songs that you can play on acoustic guitar, and a lot of these are pretty simple and straightforward to play. Even if you’ve only learned three or four chords, you can already put these together and you would already be strumming or picking some of the best songs ever.

#1. Leaving On A Jet Plane

This is perhaps one of the easiest songs beginners can play, this song by American singer-songwriter John Denver can be played with just three basic chords: C, D, and G.

#2. Heroes

Originally by David Bowie, this song was covered by the Wallflowers. It’s an awesome cover, and like “Leaving On A Jet Plane,” it can be played with the C, D and G chords.

#3. Knocking on Heaven’s Door

To play this Bob Dylan classic, you would only need to play the G, D, Am and C chords. Fun fact: Bob Dylan is the father of the lead singer and primary songwriter of the Wallflowers, Jakob Dylan.

#4. Moves Like Jagger

Two chords are all you need to start playing this Maroon 5 hit: Bm7, Em7.

#5. I Walk the Line

This hit by legendary country musician Johnny Cash is another great song for beginners. You only need the E, A and D chords, plus you can practice some fancy strumming patterns.

#6. A Long December

This Counting Crows song won’t take you a long December to master. If you have A, D, Em, and G in your chord arsenal, you can definitely play this stat.

#7. Hello

For something soulful, why not try one of Adele’s top hits? To play “Hello,” you will need the following chords: Em, G, D, and C.

#8. Love Me Do

If you play guitar, you need to play something from The Beatles. For beginners, “Love Me Do” is definitely doable because it requires only the A, D and E chords.

#9. Old Time Rock and Roll

Recorded by Bob Seger, this song wasn’t that popular when it was first released as a single in 1979. It gained recognition, however, when Tom Cruise danced to it in the movie ‘Risky Business’ in 1983. The song quickly became a favorite, and the dance scene remains to be one of Hollywood’s most iconic. Chords G, C, and D are the only ones you need to play the song.

#10. Wonderwall

Lastly, one of the most popular guitar songs with a really catchy intro riff, this song by British band Oasis only requires 4 chords: Em7, G, Dsus4, and A7sus4. This is a good song to ease your way into more intermediate guitar chords.
